Nelson Ribeiro é Diretor da Faculdade de Ciências Humanas (FCH) desde 2016 e Coordenador da Área Científica de Ciências da Comunicação desde 2013. Doutorado em Media & Cultural Studies pela Universidade de Lincoln (UK), as suas principais áreas de investigação são a economia política dos media e a história da comunicação, nomeadamente os fluxos de comunicação transnacionais e a utilização dos media como instrumentos de propaganda ou diplomacia pública. Membro do Conselho de Direção do Centro de Investigação em Comunicação e Cultura (CECC), é coordenador da Linha de Investigação Media, Technology, Contexts. Nos últimos anos tem participado em diversas redes de investigação internacionais, de entre as quais se destaca "Connecting the Wireless World - Writing a Global Radio History", financiada pelo Leverhulme Trust. Desde 2012 é vice-chair da secção de Communication History da European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). Foi professor convidado na Universität Augsburg (Alemanha) e na University of Saint Joseph (Macau-China). Coordenador do Mestrado em Ciências da Comunicação da FCH entre 2010 e 2016, desempenhou igualmente as funções de Diretor de Programação da Rádio Renascença entre 2005 e 2013 e da MEGA FM entre 2000 e 2005.

Nelson Ribeiro is the Dean of the School of Human Sciences (since 2016) where he is also the Chair of the Communication Studies Department (since 2013). He was awarded a PhD in Media & Cultural Studies from the University of Lincoln (UK) and presently his main research interests are political economy of the media and communication history, focusing on transnational communication fluxes and the usage of the media as instruments of propaganda and public diplomacy. Member of the Board of Directors at the Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC), he also coordinates the research line on Media, Technology, Contexts. Nelson Ribeiro has participated in several international research networks and is presently a member of the project "Connecting the Wireless World - Writing a Global Radio History" financed by the Leverhulme Trust. Since 2012 he is vice-chair of the Communication History Section at the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) and he has also been an invited guest professor at Universität Augsburg (Germany) and at the University of Saint Joseph (Macau-China). Coordinator of the MA in Communication Studies at the School of Humanities between 2010 and 2016, he was also programme director of a national broadcasting station, Radio Renascença, between 2005 and 2013, and of MEGA FM between 2000 and 2005.
